The weirdest thing happened to Roxi this evening. She was growling and barking in the air and acting as if she was catching flies she saw. She kept looking around quickly like she saw or heard something. It lasted a while and I finally gave her 1/2 a benedryl thinking she was hearing something in her ears, possibly an ear infection (?) She is a 5yo Boston. Anyone's thoughts?

Could be...I would check with vet. A friend of mine has a jack Russell 15 yo. She has canine vestibular disease an inner ear thing. She started with head tilt unsteady and rapid eye movements. He thought she was having a stroke. Turns out to be vestibular Wichita has no cure but time.

Vet tends to think she is seeing little floaters in her eyes. She is totally aware of her surroundings and can be redirected when called/touched. I am watching her closely.

Roxi still had some symptoms last night so back to the vet we go. Poor little pipsqueak. I know she is miserable when this happens.

Vet cannot find a thing wrong with our little Boston girl. We are going to keep her on Benedryl since that calmed her last night and possibly a thunder shirt if needed. He kept her all day to watch her and she didn't do it once.

UPDATE: When Roxi began snapping this evening, we gave another Benedryl and I covered her up with her blanket and I held her. She napped for a few minutes and has been normal all evening. I still don't get it but at least I am feeling better about her right now.

UPDATE: Roxi is now doing the air biting even though she is on Benedryl. She seems to know and whines before it happens. Don't know what the next step should be.

Not sure anyone is seeing this, our little tuxedo sweetie is back at the vet waiting to be seen. I noticed that she sneezes before this happens so maybe it is something sinusy or she has a headache too. This is my daughter's dog but I am so attached to her. She is so tiny and just a clown in our home.

Can you take videos from your phone? I might help the vet diagnose if they could see exactly what she's doing.

I had a Collie who had seizures and she would do this also along with the Grand mals she would take. Definitely see the vet.

Roxi is now being treated for a sinus infection which includes antibiotics and antihistamine. She has only had one episode this evening, just about dusk. We took the advice and videotaped her episodes for the vet. I am worried as I think I looks like partial complex seizures. But with her acting so much better I am optimistic. Still have fingers crossed for my little pipsqueak of a dog.

Well hopefully the infection is what's causing the behavior - especially if she seems a bit better already. Those sinus infections can cause a lot even in humans - everything from headaches to asthma. Perhaps it was causing pressure on the eyes that distorted her vision and that's what she was reacting to.

Regardless, I hope she does better now!

Deborah,

This sure is a symptom that I have never read about. I do have experience with Vestibular Disease and Seizures too! But your description does not match anything that my dogs have done. My best advice is for you to keep a chart of the time, day, duration and a description of what you are seeing. The video should be of help to your Vet. I am no expert and if your Vet can not relieve Roxi's episodes, I might consider going to another Vet or even a Vet Hospital. :dk

So sorry that you and your Roxi. :hp

Dawn :paw

Roxi is doing so much better this morning. She is sneezing quite a bit which leads me to believe it is a sinus issue. She is now bringing me her toys so I do think she feels better, although is a bit groggy at first from the meds. I assume because she is a short nosed breed all sorts of sinusy things can be going on that we don't even know about! I know she isn't a cocker but if she could be, she would! She loves to chase the squirrels out of the yard just like the cockers do, and lays down for me to brush her when it is her turn.

Deborah I've had 2 bostons and I can tell you sinus, colds/sneezing, and often throwing up clear is a fact of life for them. I love love love the breed regardless. They are such happy playful little dogs They are right up there with cockers for me. And the best part, wash towel dry and good to go. Everytime you post a pic of Roxy I want her :gig

How's she doing today? Now that she's been on meds a while do you still see the behaviors?

Vickie, it is strange. I only saw it once for a second yesterday around dusk. I just picked her up and redirected her to go "help me feed the koi" and she was fine after that. I do believe that was the problem as she is very sneezy now with being on the antihistimine. She acts a bit tired but so much better. Thank you for asking.

Roxi have not been eating flies all weekend! I think she did have an infection because she certainly was sneezing a lot. She is her old playful self again. Poor little pipsqueak was a sick little girl.
