I saw that some breeder had a merle/roan puppy (not on here), yes, both in one puppy. Should the two, a merle and a roan, ever be bred if intentional. Or could this be the outcome in another way?
Any health issues in breeding the two? Just curious.

Never should a merle and roan be bred together.

Breeding Merle to Roan is really not the best idea, as it can hide the Merle or Roan Pattern.....It could look Roan, or Look Merle, but actually be Merle x Roan. The same thing goes with Buff or Sable. They both hide the coloring too. I think the only way to tell Roan x Merle would be if it had Blue eyes...as I think a Roan X Merle would have Roan & Merle Markings and may look very confusing. But not every merle has blue eyes. Even though you aren't supposed to, People will breed Merle to Buff, Merle to Sable, and Merle to Roan. And Roan to Sable too. Roans can be bred to Roans, or any Parti that isn't a merle or sable. No Solids. Roans are considered Parti's. Roans can also be bred to Tri's.

Merles shouldn't be bred IMO at all. It's just a big fat can of worms.

If the puppy you see is really merle AND roan, it should have spots in it's white, and merle patterning in it's colored areas. It cannot come about in any other way than a roan being one of the parents.

Roan can be bred to any color including solids, you just won't see the roan. It can come back to the should partis be bred to solid question though. IMO doesn't matter, much more important things to worry about.

Anyway roans can certainly be bred to sable and whites, and can be quite stunning.

I would love to see a picture of this pup. I don't need a link to the breeder can you just send the pic to me in a PM?

I think I am the breeder of said BlueMerle Roan Puppy (he's the only pup left available in my "Somewhere Over the Rainbow Litter". He is definately both, his mom a chocolate roan and his father a sable parti merle. I realize there are those that don't like merles and thus will always tell you they should never be bred, I happen to have an educated and experienced opinion that disagrees with that.

There is no problem identifying MERLES vs Roans in my puppy's pedigree (I require they be registered differently with a name that can be googled and brings you to my MERLE Information page) altho the majority of my pups are sold only as pets and with a spay/neuter agreement and to homes that I carefully screen and require references for. The only agreed upon caution regarding breeding merles is not to breed to another merle (which I have not). The reason for this is the lack of melanin (pigment) for cell development in the eyes and ears.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and favored color/pattern and Merle just happens to be mine. The ASC might not approve at this time and there will be those that tell you they never will, but the AKC is making progress (albeit slow). My puppies are healthy (physically and mentally), born and raised as part of my family and go to homes that are informed about the controversy that surrounds Merles.

I am adding his photo that best shows his roaning developing on his tummy and legs, he does have one blue eye and is clearly a blue merle. I am not intending to self promote or advertise my litter here, I would need permission and approval and I am not seeking either.

Kat,
Whatever "progress" you are giving credit to AKC belongs to the American Spaniel Club (ASC). ASC, as the parent club, establishes the breed standard. AKC as a registry establishes the record-keeping system. The ability to check off "merle" on the AKC Registration Form is because of action taken by ASC.
