My cousin has been caring for a new litter of pups. They are basically mutts but thanks to my wonderful forum friends she has received some great advice and tips. The pups are starting to be mobile but she is noticing that they seem to be all belly. Is it possible for the pups to be overweight? How do you regulate a pup's weight if it is only nursing?

They are about 3 weeks old.

Hey Naomi:

I'm glad to hear that the pups are doing well. Do you know if they've been dewormed yet? Most puppies have worms, and that might account for their big tummies. I don't know the schedule (age wise) to do so, but I'm sure someone will come along and tell you. Other than that, I don't have any ideas. Any chance we are going to get to see some pictures of these little ones?

ETA: I just found this link which might be helpful:

Pups have fat tummies. Do you think maybe she just isn't used to seeing pups that young? Worms are a possibility. Many are born with them, just happens I'm told.

I am going to try to post pictures this weekend. It took her awhile to get them posted on her Facebook page. I will ask her about worms.

If they are fat at 3 weeks, that's usually a good sign that they are healthy and feeding well. However, distended bellies can also be a sign of worms, so they definitely need to be wormed at least once if not twice by 8 weeks, usually from about 4-5 wks. It's not hard, you can buy Panacur deworming paste for puppies from the vet or online and feed orally according to directions. Dosage is according to weight.

They should be wormed @ 2 weeks, along with mom and then usually another dose 10 days later. We usually de-worm 3-4 times before they go to their new homes.

I usually worm at 2.5 weeks, 5 weeks and 8 weeks. Chunky fat puppies are fine, as long as the tummy isn't abnormally distended which could mean worms. I know with both of my litters I've been amazed at them managing to stand up because they have all been so chubby!
