Never heard of dog drying cages before...now never plan to to have them used on my dogs!

Scourge scourge scourge. Heated cage dryers are a nightmare. It's hard to believe they actually manufacture them anymore, but they do. This homemade one is even worse. Poor little girl.

Yeah, those things are used a lot where I live. That's a BIG part of why I started 'way back when (18 years ago!) doing my own grooming- after a "groomer" told me "oh, we won't put a little dog like yours in there." I didn't trust that- took Feather home, and have never entertained the idea of anyone else grooming any of my dogs since!!

This just makes me cry, the thought that that little baby had to suffer like that!

Just so you guys know, I would say probably 80%, maybe even 90% of groomers use cage dryers. I would check with your groomer to know about their policy.

And even if they don't use a heated dryer they may use box fans or room air dryers. I personally wouldn't want my cold wet dog dried with a box fan, even at room temperature. Brrr.

I heard about that (how tragic!) and like you, I had never heard of dog drying cages either . Like you, I will never allow them to be used on my dog. However, since I just got my grooming table and supplies recommended by this site, I will be grooming my own dog from now on.

The groomer I was using did not use such a contraption; she used one of those stand-up dog dryers. Jim mentioned the same stand-up dog dryer that my groomer uses in his DVD, too.

This is awful. We had an awful experienced with a groomer years ago. My brother in law took Monchi to a groomer. He had issues with fleas so the groomer put insecticide on him and guess what??? he died of poisoniong. It was an tremendous loss for all the family. We then got Monchi 2 which was replaced by the groomer. This dont take away the issue. I am very careful with groomers. Holly now is groomed at the vet where they are always checking on her and know all her medical issues.

Dog drying cages are used all over in SoCal from what I've seen. I never gave it a second thought. Now I will, though. I wouldn't want Sadie to have a cold breeze blowing on her, but I thought a warm one would feel good. I had no idea. Of course, I'm sure the commercial ones are safer, but this is such a sad story. I'm so very sorry for the pup and its family.

You know actually they are not. They have timers, but that's only as good as the person who is using it.

A groomer on another board I'm on did a test with a stand dryer. In her smallest cage in a bank (you know the type you see at vets) she set a stand dryer on it with a thermometer inside. Not covered, so the entire front of the cage was vented. In five minutes the temperature in there was 115F. FIVE minutes!

Yes, there's been a lot of discussion about that on my other forum. That poor cocker! I would never use a cage drier like that, commercial or home made. If I am doing more than one dog, the dog being cage dried has a drier blowing from near the cage, not fixed on at point blank range, and the cage is big enough that the dog can move around and shift position, and I am in the room working on the other dog so I can see if the dog looked uncomfortable at all or if the general air temperature gets warm. I prefer to dry on a table though, you get a better finish and you can be in complete control of the heat situation.
